I find Mr. and Mrs. Loving to be one of the true gems of the ‘Interracial Movie’ genre. It is also one of the few movies which truly put the focus on love; from a budding coming of age love to a love that stands the test of time, literally. Not only was this a great movie; but it was also based on the controversial Loving v. Virginia case which set the foundation for Interracial Marriages of today.
Mr. and Mrs. Loving tells the tale of a small town, where blacks and whites get along in a time when blacks are looked down upon. In a place where different races can be friends; but not fall in love and get married, Richard and Mildred did just that. Returning home after a race, Richard takes notice of Mildred, his childhood friend’s younger sister, who use to tag along with them when they were kids. Mildred has grown into a beautiful young lady and Richard can not believe his eyes. A few dates, an impending pregnancy, a forbidden marriage, betrayal, and bigotry all pave the way for this epic journey.
The characters are believable and engrossing. I was pulled into their plight, their love, and their strength. The lead male character, played by Timothy Hutton, was remarkable as the good ole country boy who refused to give in to the ways of old. A character who himself becomes the minority, once the family is forced to move to more ‘suitable’ quarters. Lela Rochon plays the meek and adolescent character with a silent strength that actually starts the ball rolling for the fight for one’s Civil Rights and a real chance at love.
I recommend this movie to anyone who loves the interracial/multiracial movie genre. It will not disappoint and will leave you wanting to know more about the Loving Family and their struggle that gave so many the right to marry the ones they love. There is also a day set aside called ‘Loving Day’ that commemorates the legalization for interracial couples.
